Politics Of Showmanship By Comrade Kingsley Azuh

Politics Of Showmanship By Comrade Kingsley Azuh

Every game or business has its tactics and methodology. Some believe that the method used to win a particular game can apply to every game. The answer is capital  ‘NO’ I once visited a close relation who was the then chairman of one of the branches of the National  Union of Road Transport Workers ,NURTW, popularly called the ‘Agboros’ and he was shouting at the height of his voice and threatening to beat and if possible maim any member that crossed his part. I was surprised and I tried to find out why he behaved that way. He smiled and said ‘na so we de doam’ He explained that if he failed to do that, they would override him, thinking that he was weak. He said that if he does not behave as a very powerful man with some diabolical powers, others would overthrow him, so he needed to shout and behave as if he is a man that is adequately fortified.

The game of football has its tactics and those that have been winning the World Cup understand the technicalities and the tricks in the game.

Those who play the game of draft also know the technicalities involved in that game. In the game of draft those who shout in the course of the play do not win at the end.

Politics is a technical game and only those who understand it make exploits in the theatre of politics. Some politicians make a lot of noise thinking that noise making will help them get recognition and be counted as strong voice in decision making in the field of politics and could translate to success.

This brings my mind to the activities of one of our brothers and an old time politician, Elder Godsdey Peter Orubebe. Orubebe is a very funny politician who likes showmanship and he uses it as a means of getting attention but he fails to understand that politics is about tactics.

Orubebe was once a Supervisory Councilor, and later Chairman of Burutu local government area. In July 2007, President Umaru Yar’Adua appointed him Minister of Special Duties. Later he became Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs when that ministry was created in December 2008.  His people believed and confessed that he did not affect his community positively when he held sway in power. However, Orubebe is always quick to shout and condemn those his mind tells him are not performing.

On 31 March 2015, Orubebe Godsday Peter, acting as a polling agent for the PDP, made attempts at disrupting the proceedings of the 2015 presidential election collation. Orubebe alleged that INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, had taken side with the main opposition political party, APC. Although he later apologized publicly but it is on record that he exhibited an irresponsible behavior during the day in question. If Orubebe had done a tactical political hope work, Jonathan would have won that election and there would have been no need for such disgraceful behavior.

Just few weeks ago, the same elder Orubebe announced to the whole world that he has dumped the People Democratic Party, PDP for the All Progressives Congress, APC. The question is ‘was Orubebe a member of the PDP as at the time he said he has resigned from the party?’ The answer is no.

In 2019, the leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Tuomo ward 3 in Burutu local government area of the State rejected plans by Orubebe to defect to the party. Since then he has been in APC but he was not recognized in his ward. Instead of telling the truth that he has now been accepted by his ward, he told the world that he has dumped PDP.

He dumped the PDP in 2019 when the Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa said no to his numerous requests to ruin the State financially and deny the citizenry the opportunity to enjoy the dividends of democracy. Politics is not a game for those who think they can use force to get to the top or for those who engage in showmanship to show the world what they are capable of doing.

They should emulate the Governor of Delta State who knows the mathematics of political nwanyolism. (Gentility).
