A two day workshop for top Local Government Information Managers in the Unified Local Government Councils in Delta State has commenced.
The workshop with the Theme, “Information/Time Management in the Local Government Service of Delta State” is being organized by the Delta State Local Government Service Commission in collaboration with Omega Consulting.
Chairman of the State Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Joseph Otirhue, declared the workshop which was attended by over 50 participants, open on Tuesday 20th October, 2020 at Orchid Hotel, Asaba.
Hon. Otirhue was accompanied to the venue of the workshop by the first member of the Commission; Pastor Greatman Chukwuka, the Second member; Hon. Powei Gwuembe Bakes, the Secretary to the Commission as well as some top officials of the Commission.
Declaring the workshop open, Hon Joseph Otirhue restated the cardinal responsibilities of the Local Government Service commission to included training and development of the staff of the Unified Local Government System in the State and regretted that the Covid-19 Pandemic affected negatively the Commission’s training schedule this year.
“As you must have observed, the Covid-19 Pandemic has had a negative effect on almost all government programs for the year 2020. Mostly, training programs had to be put off in order to avert the spread of the deadly virus.
“Our decision to organize this workshop is a result of the general tuning down of the restrictions; however, we are under obligation to abide with the existing protocol regarding covid-19 by always wearing our nose mask, keeping safe distance and washing of our hands intermittently,” Hon. Otirhu assured.
He described the Local Government as a critical channel of development, saying that as a third tier; it remains the most accessible and closer to the people, whereby it is best situated in implementing national strategic plans, making them operational in the local Arena.
“This Seminar is therefore apt and timely. Information and time management is a strategic means of achieving this goal. Information management has become a tool for efficient leadership and fellowship trait, which can lead to proper management and dissemination of accurate and authentic information to the general public,” the Commission boss posited, even as he added that information gathering and sourcing in the information industry is anchored on time management.
“In time management, you must have patients and know how to tackle difficult task within a given space of time. It teaches you how to make the most of your available time and increases your productivity efficiency.
“Information and Time Management are two veritable tools that any officer requires to be able to carry out his or her duties effectively and efficiently,” he said while calling on information managers of the Local Governments in the State to avail themselves the opportunity of the workshop to improving on their skill in information gathering and time management.
While affirming that the training would go a long way in helping the Local Government Information managers to distinguish between fake news and genuine information, Hon. Joseph Otirhue admonished them to be resolute towards putting into practice, the knowledge acquired in the seminar as they carry out their duties in their various local Government Council, saying that is when the success of the workshop will be achieved.
