2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 Corps members deployed to Delta state have been charged to demonstrate the utmost sense of discipline, honesty and selflessness during their one year national service.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, who gave the charge on Friday at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, during the swearing-in of the corps members, said they should, through their conduct, be committed to achieving a more cohesive and peaceful Nigeria where genuine love, understanding and peaceful coexistence should be the standard.
The Governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon Johnson Erijo, said the disposition of the Corps members should mark them out as patriotic citizens, adding that as agents of hope for a better Nigeria, they should be confident in the ability of the country to pull through its myriad of challenges.
Oborevwori said one of the economic imperatives of the present day was the need adequately equip the nation’s young graduates with the necessary skills to encourage self reliance and promote entrepreneurship, which informed the introduction of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Programme to the NYSC scheme.
While urging the corps members to take the orientation course and other aspects of the mandatory one-year service seriously, the Governor said they should strive to embark on visible community development projects that would improve the well-being of the people, as well as shun all forms of vices and anti social behavior during their service year.
He said government, on its part, would do everything possible to ensure the safety and welfare of the corps members during the one year national assignment.
In his address, the Secretary to the State Government and Chairman State Governing Council of the NYSC, Dr Kingsley Emu, said the orientation course was designed to equip the corps members for future challenges and endeavours, inculcate discipline in them, raise their moral tone encourage them to develop common ties through harmonious coexistence and engender the spirit of self reliance through the acquisition of various skills.
The SSG, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet and Administration, Mr Henry Onyeukwu; thanked corps employers in the state, who over the years had been partnering with the NYSC in the training of future leaders and urged them to make adequate arrangements to receive those who would be posted to them at the end of the orientation course.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr Also Olusegun; revealed that the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 orientation course started nationwide on 12th July, and at the close of registration at 12 mid night on 13th July, a total of 1,230 prospective corps members, made up of 540 males and 690 females had been registered for the orientation programme.
He thanked the government and people of Delta state for their hospitality and support for the NYSC, even as he asked for more interventions, and pledged that the scheme would work with the Oborevwori administration to better the lot of the people.
The corps members were sworn-in by Justice Onome Marshall-Umukoro, who represented the State Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Diai.
