2023: PDP elects Atiku presidential candidate

Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has emerged the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate for the 2023 general election.

He emerged after a keenly contested primary held at the Valedrome of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on Saturday night.

The Chairman of the PDP Convention Committee and former Senate President, David Mark, announced the results of the primary on Saturday night.

Abubakar, an Adamawa-born politician scored 371 votes to beat his closest rival, Nyesom Wike, who scored 237 votes while former Senate President Bukola Saraki came third with 70 votes.

Other results include Udom Emmanuel 38 votes; Bala Mohammed 20; Anyim Pius Anyim 14 votes and Tari Diana Oliver 1 vote while 12 voted were voided.

Earlier Chairman Accreditation Committee, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta said 774 delegates were expected but 767 were accredited.

Declaring the convention open, the National Chairman of the party and one time President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Iyorchia Ayu said with the PDP, Nigeria will rise again, even as he urged delegates to sustain their high level of decorum during and after the voting process.
